Chuck Close is one of the most significant artists today in contemporary art. As a painter, photographer, and printmaker, Chuck Close is boundless in his understanding of process. Over the past 30 years he has been an innovator of portraiture, and is best known for his full frontal facial portraits.
In 2000 he received the National Medal of Arts and his work is found in every significant public and private contemporary art collection world wide.
In 2002 Close completed a photogravure portrait of the artist Lorna Simpson. Simpson’s face is seen in exquisite detail every texture illuminated with life. Close took a black and white Polaroid image of Simpson and used it to create the photogravure.
